Chapter Five

Whitney wasn’t sure what had happened to her during their mating. At some point there were bright lights. At the time, and all she could think about was some short, older lady telling her not to go into the light. Then she realized she wasn’t Carol Anne and she wasn’t starring in a remake of Poltergeist. Plus, she was pretty sure Poltergeist wasn’t a porn vid.

But the mating details didn’t matter because she now stood with a wide-eyed Emmett who was babbling about the two men loving her, and her heart was about to burst. She reached for the cloth, more than ready to rid herself of the “squishy” in favor of the whole “love profession” part of the day. Of course that idea had to be bashed to the ground.

There was no sexy meeting of lips and then awkward after-sex wipe up.

Nope, she got old dudes raiding her room.

The double doors slammed open, intricately carved panels banging against the walls. The collision sent a shower of drywall raining onto the carpet. And within the doorway stood a man she’d never wanted to see again bracketed by four, equally old guys.

And she was naked. Damn it, why did crap have to go down while she was naked?

In a blink, Levy stood before her, blocking her view of the men and Emmett immediately joined him. Well, apparently they didn’t care about being naked, but she sure as hell did. Leaning over, she tugged on a sheet, yanking and pulling on the damn thing with all of her might. When it didn’t come free, she realized her might was very small.

One last, giant wrench and she had the fabric free. It came loose so suddenly that she thumped to the ground and sprawled on the carpeted floor. Damn it. She looked around and realized attentions were still on her guys and not on her lovely display of bedroom acrobatics. Good.

Whitney pushed to her feet and wrapped the sheet around her a few times, tucking the ends within the folds so it would stay up on its own. Dressed-ish, she focused on the men who had killed her squishy buzz.

Sarvis was front and center, rage etched in every saggy feature. His eyes weren’t the mud brown that she’d seen the previous day, but were now a dirty cream whereas her mate’s always shined a brilliant white. This guy had magic, but it looked…

Tainted. Levy’s voice floated through her head.

That seemed right.

So, Sarvis was the head old guy and if the colors of his eyes went along with his power, he didn’t seem like he’d be much of a threat. Why were her mates hanging back? She wanted the old guys gone. Finite. Kaput.

Not that easy. He has friends and they know we won’t leave you vulnerable long enough to take care of them. They’ll go after you, Whitney. It would be best if you stayed alive. Damn, that was the most words she’d ever heard Emmett speak. If telepathy counted as speaking.

And, hey, she wanted to stay alive, too.
